FOR OFFICIALS AND
THE LEADERS WHO DEVELOP THEM

Built for the moments that shape an official.

REFYN gives officials a private place to prepare, use source-grounded rule guidance, work through pressure, reset after difficult moments, and keep developing. For officiating leaders, it creates a consistent structure for mentorship and development without opening an official's private space.

PRIVATE FOR THE OFFICIAL. STRUCTURED FOR THE ORGANIZATION.

Official

I missed an important call late in the match, and I can't stop replaying it.

Ask REFYN

One decision does not define your entire assignment. Let's separate what happened from what you are carrying.

What did you see in the moment, and what information became clear afterward?

Verified rules and resources

Do not settle for an answer without a source.

When an officiating question depends on the rules, REFYN helps identify the relevant framework, searches the verified material currently available, and shows where the answer comes from.

Rules and Resources

Sport: SoccerRule framework: IFAB Laws of the Game 2026/27

Your question

A defender's arm was away from the body when the ball struck it after a deflection. What should I consider?

REFYN clarifies

Handling depends on the framework you are working under. This answer is limited to the IFAB Laws of the Game 2026/27, the framework you selected.

What the written Law addresses

Handling the ball

Not every touch of a player's hand or arm with the ball is an offence, and for handball purposes the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit. It is an offence if a player deliberately touches the ball with the hand or arm, or touches the ball when the hand or arm has made their body unnaturally bigger, meaning the position of the hand or arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the body movement for that specific situation.

What stays with your judgment

Distance of the deflection, whether the arm position was justifiable for that body movement, and what you could actually see from your angle.

What REFYN can search today

Coverage is stated honestly. Searchable verified text exists for one framework today. Everything else is offered as an official resource link so you read it in the source that governs your match.

REFYN is independent. Naming a publisher identifies the source of a rule. It does not imply endorsement, affiliation, or approval by any governing body.

Bring REFYN the play

Start with what happened.

Describe the play in your own words. REFYN helps identify the details that matter before offering guidance.

REFYN works from what you write. There is no video analysis, image analysis, or file upload.

  1. 01

    Describe the play

The official explains what happened, in plain language, with no form to fill in first.

  2. 02

    Add context

REFYN asks about the sport, competition, role, rule framework, position, timing, and the actions that matter.

  3. 03

    Separate rule from judgment

REFYN explains what the written rule addresses and what still depends on your observation and judgment.

  4. 04

    Verify the source

When verified material is available, REFYN provides the citation and the official source. When it is not, REFYN says so.

  5. 05

    Carry it forward

REFYN helps you identify what to review, what to discuss with your crew, and what to prepare for next time.

Composure

Short lesson

Composure is not the absence of pressure. It is the decision to move at your own speed while everything around you speeds up. Officials who look calm are usually not calm. They have chosen a pace, a breath, and a first sentence in advance.

In officiating

A decision goes against the home crowd in the seventieth minute. Two players arrive fast. The official who has practiced composure walks in at normal speed, speaks once, and lets the noise pass instead of answering it.

Reflection

Where does your speed change first when pressure rises: your feet, your voice, or your decisions?

Practice action

In your next assignment, after the first contested decision, take one full breath before you speak. Write down what you noticed afterward.

Your written answers are private to you unless you intentionally share a specific eligible item.

Sample content for demonstration. No official's private answers appear here.

Mentorship

Development grows stronger when someone is in your corner.

Officials can invite a trusted mentor, agree on professional development priorities, receive encouragement, and share specific eligible progress without opening their private REFYN space.

  1. Mentor invitation

You invite a mentor by email. Nothing is shared until they accept and you choose what to share.

  2. Accepted relationship

Accepted 4 March. Mentoring relationship active.

  3. Planned check-in

Phone call, Thursday. Topic agreed in advance by both of you.

  4. Shared development priority

Positioning late in matches. Shared by you, one item, on purpose.

  5. Program week completed

Week 2 completed. Completion only. Your written answers are not included.

  6. Encouragement from a mentor

"You walked in at normal speed on that second yellow. That is the work showing up."

Private Ask REFYN conversations, Reset work, Handle It work, journals, emotional processing, and private reflections remain private unless the official intentionally shares a specific eligible item.
